Launch of an Agroecology Financing Analysis Tool (AFAT) for the public sector in Africa

Friday, 25 Nov, 09:00 – 10:00 (CAT). Register HERE

Presented by the Partnership for Social Accountability (PSA) Alliance

Increasingly, African countries are explicitly adopting agroecology in their national agricultural frameworks as a holistic approach to transforming their agricultural and food systems to improve food security, wealth creation, poverty reduction and to meet the commitments of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the African Union’s Agenda 2063 more effectively. This transformation, however, requires substantive investment (both in mindset changes and financial terms) and the redirecting of investment to promote agroecological approaches throughout the whole food system.

The PSA Alliance has developed an Agroecology Financing Analysis Tool (AFAT) to assist its members in their assessment of public financing for agriculture, with a focus on identifying the current levels of support, investment and commitment to agroecological transitions and climate resilient and gender-responsive agricultural practices that benefit smallholder farmers.

In particular, the tool helps analysts and activists answer the question: to what extent is current public financing for agriculture in Africa, from both overseas development assistance (ODA) and national budgets, supportive of a transition to agroecology?

Join us as we share this innovative tool and the results of its pilot covering agricultural investment in Malawi, Zimbabwe and at the SADC regional level.

On 16 November 2022 the PSAM co-hosted a critical thinking forum on South Africa’s 2022 MTBPS as detailed in invite below. Should you wish to observe a recording of the forum please see the following Youtube recording:

Invitation to participate in OpenGov Week 2022 Online Event: Renewing Open Government in South Africa: Progress and Innovation

Important steps are being taken with respect to open government in South Africa, in response to calls for increased accountability, good governance and the combating of corruption.

In December 2020, South Africa submitted its 4th Open Government National Action Plan (NAP) to the Open Government Partnership (OGP), an international, multilateral initiative launched in 2011 that aims to secure concrete commitments to promote transparency, empower citizens, fight corruption, and harness new technologies to strengthen governance. At the same time, South Africa is developing a National Plan of Action (NPoA) to address the governance challenges highlighted in the recent Second Generation Review Report to the African Peer Review Mechanism and recommendations from the Zondo Commission, which highlighted the
need to strengthen the rule of law and reinforce good governance.

With these initiatives in mind, the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA),and the OGP Interim Steering Committee for South Africa and the Civic Tech Innovation Network (CTIN) are hosting an
online convening to explore opportunities for renewing open government and supporting innovative responses to governance challenges in South Africa.

As a valued stakeholder in promoting accountable governance and supporting civic innovation, we would like to invite you to speak or make a short presentation of about 10 minutes on key policy or technology initiatives your department or organisation is implementing related to open or responsive government.

Following the presentations, we will hold an interactive session with webinar participants to source ideas and questions for discussion and to develop a deeper understanding of what needs to be included in emerging
open government activities.

Date: Friday, 20 May 2022 at 14h00 – 15h30 CAT/ SAST

With your input during the session we hope to strengthen our collective interventions to renew and related multi-stakeholder work in South Africa.
Please confirm your participation via email to Sihle Gcitshilana: siba.gcilitshana@wits.ac.za by Monday, 9 May 2022 and register using this link.

We are excited to convene an initial conversation on systems convenening and governance.

This is a reminder of the Roundtable taking place on 14 September. Please note changes to the ROundtable Title and Objectives .

The Putting People in People’s Parliament (PPiPP) cordially invites you to the Successes and Challenges in Gaining Access to Provincial Legislatures from a Civil Society Perspective Virtual Roundtable which will be held on the Zoom platform on Tuesday, 14 September 2021. The objectives of the roundtable are to:

  • Create a platform for dialogue between civil society organisations on their experiences in accessing provincial legislatures.

  • Discuss mechanisms to increase public access to and involvement in the work of provincial legislatures.

The roundtable will include panelists from civil society organisations based across South Africa with experience in monitoring and accessing provincial legislatures.

The discussions from this roundtable will contribute to the PPiPP case study and sector guidelines.

PPiPP is a collective of organisations working towards the advancement of social justice, the realisation of human rights, and strong constitutional democracy in South Africa. The objective of PPiPP is to contribute to improving a capable and accountable developmental state through strengthening oversight by enhancing the capacities and involvement of civil society organisations in legislature’s oversight and public participation processes.

This includes improved access to information on the legislatures’ oversight and participation process; strengthened capacities of CSOs to engage with provincial legislatures; and enhanced participation of CSOs in oversight and accountability actions of the legislatures. PPiPP has a focus in the Eastern and Western Cape legislatures and in national Parliament.

Regional dialogue to interrogate SADC’s 10-year plan

Organisations from across Southern Africa will come together on 29 and 30 June 2021 to interrogate the region’s 10-year strategic plan and urge governments to ensure the ambitious roll-out tangibly benefits the region’s most vulnerable, amid the challenges of the Covid-19 crisis, climate change and growing poverty and inequality.

The virtual regional dialogue for non-state actors will bring together a diverse range of non-state actors – representing civil society, business, smallholder farmers, informal traders, people’s movements, media and trade unions – to assess and inform the Southern African Development Community’s (SADC) implementation plan for the Regional Indicative Strategic Development Plan (RISDP) 2020-2030, due to be approved before the SADC Heads of State and Government Summit in August 2021.

The dialogue, held under the theme Building Back Better – Ensuring Social Accountability in Southern Africa’s Development, will feature presentations by the SADC Secretariat and national government representatives, as well as parallel discussions on critical issues of climate change and sustainable agriculture, domestic financing of healthcare, gender and development, inclusive labour policies, vaccine access and the participation of youth and civil society.

The dialogue builds on SADC’s commitment to partner with non-state actors in the roll-out of the RISDP. The 10 co-conveners are urging member states to actively engage their people in the development of national implementation plans that prioritise the needs of the most vulnerable and, ultimately, create even more resilient, inclusive and socially accountable nations and communities.

Media can register for the dialogue by visiting https://bit.ly/2Swwo2J.

About the co-conveners: The dialogue is convened by: Southern Africa Trust, Southern African People’s Solidarity Network, Economic Justice Network (EJN) of the Fellowship of Christian Councils in Southern Africa (FOCCISA), Southern Africa Coordination Council (SATUCC), GenderLinks, Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) and the Partnership for Social Accountability (PSA) Alliance (a consortium of organisations including ActionAid International (AAI), Public Service Accountability Monitor (PSAM) of Rhodes University, Eastern and Southern Africa Small Scale Farmers’ Forum (ESAFF) and SAfAIDS).

About the RISDP 2020-2030: The RISDP covers key areas of regional integration: peace, security and good governance (the foundation); industrial development and market integration (pillar I);  infrastructure development in support of regional integration (pillar II); social and human capital development (pillar III); and cross-cutting issues of gender, youth, environment, climate change and disaster risk management.
